FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
More than 50 legislators signed on to a letter asking the Illinois Congressional Delegation to vote against harmful cuts to the Medicaid program
Springfield, IL – Fifty-two members of the Illinois General Assembly signed a joint letter to their congressional colleagues asking them to reject cuts or changes to Medicaid that would reduce patient eligibility and benefits.
The letter, developed in partnership with Protect Our Care – Illinois (POC-IL), warns that proposed changes at the federal level could impact the more than 3.4 million Illinoisans—including nearly half the State’s children—who receive critical healthcare coverage through the program.
“Those pushing to cut Medicaid are turning their backs on the working families, children, and seniors throughout Illinois who rely on it every day,” said State Rep. Anna Moeller (D-Elgin). “Gutting this program won’t save money—it will cost lives, force hospitals to close, and shift the burden to Illinois taxpayers to clean up the mess. We can’t afford to let that happen.”
Through this letter, legislators highlighted the importance of Medicare to the economy and public health of communities across Illinois, from sustaining urban and rural hospitals and community clinics to supporting mental health and long-term care for older adults.
“For people experiencing or at risk of homelessness, Medicaid is often the only option to access much-needed healthcare services, including life-saving treatment for chronic conditions, mental health, and substance use,” said Niya K. Kelly, Director of State Legislative Policy, Equity, and Transformation at Chicago Coalition to End Homelessness and POC-IL advocate. “Any cuts to this critical program would push them further into crisis and make it even more difficult to get back on their feet.”
