We have fed, and provided essential daily supplies to
25,000+ people experiencing homelessness and counting.

Resources

Our comprehensive list of resources to find a homeless or at-risk person in Los Angeles County is below. Anyone searching for a missing loved one is encouraged to contact every institution before seeking out similar resources that are available in other counties. Best practices for contacting these organizations are available above the drop-down list.

Los Angeles County Homeless Shelters

Shelters are a great place to start your search for any homeless or at-risk person. These are normally the first resources that are sought after when hard times strike suddenly. Have the person’s information prepared beforehand including their: birthday, full name, gender ID, and a physical description of what they look like. This directory and the encampments directory lead to most of our success stories.

The list is long, but it’s great that homeless people have this many options available. Good luck in your search!

Social Media

The most effective social media networks for spreading the word during your search for a homeless or at-risk person are below. Your goal when using these websites should be to create a post that people want to share with others so the word spreads as fast as possible. To help your post create an emotional response, try adding as much detail as you can about your efforts, future plans, and struggles you have endured. These kinds of posts consistently drive friends and family to take action. Remember to include a high-resolution color photograph of the person with family or friends if you have one.

Facebook – Long videos (one minute or more) are great for Facebook. Live video can last multiple hours.

Instagram – A short video (less than one minute) packed with information, energy, and emotion works great here. Live video can last up to one hour.

Twitter – Twitter is great if your social network is small and you are not connected to many people online. Hashtags can bring awareness to thousands of people in a short period of time.

Reddit – Reddit is a unique social network with thousands of thriving communities (many focus directly on helping the homeless). For Example:

  • Homeless – This is a discussion and advice group for people that are currently homeless.
  • Almost Homeless – Like the above community, but for people that are at-risk of becoming homeless.
  • Poverty Finance – This is a great place to find advice on how to live effectively at extremely low income levels.

Go Fund Me – Perhaps the best place to apply the above advice and receive funding that covers the service charges and fees for any paid resources listed below.

Facial Recognition Search Engines

There are many powerful search engines that accept an image as your search query. When an image search is conducted in this way, your search results will be all of the web pages that feature an exact copy of the image you searched for. The most advanced image search software may be able to find web pages featuring the images that show the same face you searched for. Begin by finding a high-resolution image of the person you are searching for. Search for your image by dragging and dropping it into the search bars found at the links below.

Los Angeles County Police & Sheriff Homeless Liaisons

Each county or city has one or two homeless liaisons that work with families looking for homeless family members. They have cadets that go to encampments like ours do, but only localized. While the liasons and cadets are on-site, they check people’s mental and physical health statuses and try to find food and shelter resources. Unfortunately, their databases are private. Your best option to locate the liaison and request their help is to call the city and ask to speak with the liaison. We have found them to be very helpful when a bright and positive attitude is consisent throughout the phone call.

Los Angeles County Homeless Encampment Locations

Below you’ll find a list of how many homeless and at-risk individuals there are in Los Angeles County at the largest encampments, listed by population from highest to lowest. Homeless people are very protective of their space, so our best advice for approaching these encampments is to: produce a “Missing Person” flyer (using Canva.com) printed in color to show that you mean no harm; proceed with caution; and do not arrive alone. If you find the encampment especially dangerous for any reason, ask the local police station if you can be escorted by an officer.

Los Angeles County Treatment Centers

Many addiction and treatment centers have a direct line for “Patient Information”. If not, you can ask for a receptionist and be up-front about your reason for calling. Before placing your call, it’s best to gather as much information on the person you’re looking for as possible. Maintaining a nice and calm attitude will certainly improve your chances of getting the information you want as quickly as possible. Los Angeles County Inmate Search

Locating an inmate in California is fairly simple. There are many government-led search tools available to help. These tools are kept up-to-date, and return search results based on who is currently incarcerated. If you are certain that the person you are searching for is in the prison system and their name does not return any results, we recommend double-checking your information before moving on to other options. Check back periodically as their situation may change with time.

Probation and Parole

Before contacting a parole or probation officer, you should certainly have the full name of the person you are checking for and their date of birth. Additional details like their date of release may also be required. Keep in mind that many inmate search engines and online databases only include names of people that are currently incarcerated. If the person’s name is not appearing in your searches, it is likely that they are free. Finding the associated probation or parole officer is your next best step. Begin your search using the Victim Information and Notification Everyday (VINELink) website. Click the link below to start.

Los Angeles County Jails

Before placing your call, have the person’s birthday, full name, gender, and a physical description of what they look like (such as their eye and hair color, weight, height, and ethnicity). The tricky part about contacting a person in prison (especially contacting them for the first time), is that an account my be required. If the person is in custody, reach out to the jail to coordinate a call based on the appropriate hours that they schedule. Please note: if your loved one has been sentenced, it may be some time before they’re allowed to call anyone. The directory below includes phone numbers and websites where you can find more information about the necessary steps to take. Keep in mind that these are only small hurdles. You will get in touch soon enough.
