National Alliance to End Homelessness Statement on Newly-Released Federal Funds to End Homelessness

Wednesday, March 29, 2023

The National Alliance to End Homelessness today applauded the release of $2.8 billion in federal grants from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) to support community efforts to end homelessness. These funds are made available through HUD’s annual Continuum of Care program competition, which represents the federal government’s largest source of grants funding for homeless services.

“We all want to live in a nation where every person in our communities can thrive. But we will never realize this vision until we end homelessness in this country,” said Ann Oliva, CEO of the National Alliance to End Homelessness. “These resources support the life-saving work that front line workers across the country do each day. At a time when communities are increasingly tempted by the false promises of criminalization and the failed tactics from past decades, these funds provide critically needed support for the evidence-based and equitable strategies that are known to end people’s homelessness.”

As communities begin implementing these resources, the Alliance urges Congressional leaders to sustain and build upon them.

“These are investments for a happier, healthier, and more just future for our nation,” said Oliva. “We encourage lawmakers to recognize the urgency of this moment; to realize the consequences of not fully supporting this work to the needed scale; and to commit to the robust, ongoing funding that our communities depend upon.”
