GoCPS Application Deadlines and Your Rights as a Student Experiencing Homelessness

Sunday, November 24, 2024

Some Chicago Public Schools (CPS) require an application for enrollment, which families can complete through the GoCPS system. The GoCPS application deadlines are fast approaching, and it’s important that students and families experiencing homelessness have the opportunity to apply for their preferred school programs and get the support they need. Whether you are applying for kindergarten, high school, or seeking a transfer to a new school, understanding the process and your rights can help ensure your child is smoothly enrolled in school. For more information about which CPS schools require an application, visit the GoCPS webpage.

Key GoCPS Application Deadlines:

The GoCPS application deadline for the 2025-2026 school year has been extended to Friday, December 15, 2024 at 5 p.m. For families seeking a school transfer, mid-year transfer applications can be submitted at any time, but it’s always best to begin the process early to ensure the best available options for your child.

Students Experiencing Homelessness:

CPS has a program to support students experiencing homelessness, the Students in Temporary Living Situations (STLS) program. Students experiencing homelessness include students whose living situations are not fixed, regular or adequate including but not limited to students living in shelters, motels, or doubled-up with other families; staying in vehicles or campsites; and unaccompanied youth not living with a parent or guardian.

How To Apply:

Create an Account: First, you need to create an account on the GoCPS website if you don’t already have one. This account will allow you to track your child’s application and receive important updates.

Complete the Application: Log in to your GoCPS account and fill out the application form for the grade and school year you are applying for (e.g., kindergarten, middle school, high school). You will need to select your school preferences from the list of available schools and programs.

Provide Required Information: Ensure that you provide all necessary information. If your family is currently in a temporary living situations, you should include that you are in the STLS program. This will allow you to access additional support.

Submit the Application: Once you’ve filled out the application, review the information for accuracy, and submit it before the GoCPS deadline, December 15, 2024 at 5 p.m.

Wait for Results: After submitting your application, you will receive your results in the form of an offer or waitlist status for the schools you applied to.

Accept the Offer: If you receive an offer from a school, you will need to confirm acceptance by the designated date.
